Missoula's spring is usually 2 or 3 weeks ahead of Bozeman's. Bozeman has bigger mountains for hiking but Missoula has rafting/floating pretty much right downtown. Both have great beer and tons of places to drink it. Both are university towns that seem to still have a lively summer when the kids leave.
Missoula is closer to great outdoor activities (Glacier NP, Flathead Lake, Rockies), but Boise has great access to the outdoors too, especially for someone coming from NYC.
