For the Model 1897, the letters "C" , "D", and "E" were used (the letters "A" and "B" were previously used on the predecesor Model 1893).
The C, D and finally E on the bottom of the receiver by the serial number has to do with the version of the action. It appears that A (though not marked on the guns) was the Model 1893 and that B (though not marked on the guns) was the first version of the Model 1897. C, D & E were evolutionary steps of the Model 1897/97.
