Also when cold it keeps the vanes more closed in an effort to warm up the engine by making it work harder. There's a mass airflow sensor. Diesel engines in general don't have a throttle, that's why you don't ever spray MAF cleaner directly on the intake, it can over rev. Same can happen if your turbo compressor seal busts, oil will make its way into the engine and you can't turn the engine off.
