The insect bow is faster firing but each arrow does very little damage because it barely makes it over the defense threshold. The black ox crossbow on the other hand, gets over enemy defense and still has plenty of damage to spare which will actually be dealt to the enemy. It's why fire ant armor is so good for fast melee weapons.
