Regular Contributor. Mar 4, 2021. #4. The CPU on the RT-AC86U is much faster than the RT-AX82U. A triple core 1.5Ghz ARM A7 CPU is simply no match against the 1.8Ghz dual core ARM A53 CPU in the RT-AC86U. WiFi performance isn't that much faster unless you have access to WiFi 6 devices.
The RT-AX58U and the RT-AX88U hindered the performance of the RT-AX86U. I believe the RT-AC66U_B1 will too. The best use for it may be as a Media Bridge, to a few wired only clients. Diversion, Skynet, YazFi, scribe, connmon, ntpMerlin, scMerlin, uiDivStats, uiScribe, Unbound, FlexQoS, disk checker, on Ext4 w/J + 10GB swap file.
