Jul 2, 2009 · Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. The rods are the same. 351M & 400 Identification. Casting date and foundry is located on top of the block back by the bell housing. Casting date: 1st number is the year. 2nd letter is the month. 3rd & 4th number is the day of the month. Located on the passenger side of the block near the bell housing end of the block is the casting number.Welcome to FTE.
